2014 Lewis Cenker Award - HBA's Most Prestigious Award!

Established in 1984, the Lewis Cenker Award is the HBA's most prestigious award honoring an individual's lifetime achievements and their contributions to the advancement of the housing industry.

To symbolize the status of this award, it was named in the memory of one of our industry's icons - Mr. Lewis Cenker who was President of our Association in 1960 & the only member of our HBA to serve as President of the National Association of Home Builders.  The 2014 Lewis Cenker Award goes to David Clough.

David began his homebuilding career with summer construction jobs while attending college. A 1975 graduate of Princeton University, he went to work full time for a major national builder in Washington D.C. after college and moved to Atlanta in 1979.

In 1991, David founded Waterford Homes with the philosophy of a team approach, and it has grown to become one of the most respected privately-owned building companies in Atlanta, closing more than 2,500  homes in the metro area since its began. Waterford Homes currently builds in several Metro counties, with homes ranging from traditional family homes in suburban master-planned communities to townhomes in the city of Milton to luxury custom homes in Brookhaven and Sandy Springs.

David’s dedication in his business is one of the reasons Waterford Homes has been successful. Waterford has won several OBIE Awards, and David received the HBA’s 2005 Presidential Award for demonstrated leadership and commitment to the association and the building industry at large.

David has put his keen business sense and leadership skills to work to further the mission and goals of the HBA. David served as 2007 President of the HBA and has spent five years on the HBA Board of Directors’ Executive Committee. David also serves on The Housing Institute Board of Directors, which administers the Certified Professional Home Builder of Georgia program.

David is a great supporter of HomeAid Atlanta, the HBA’s charitable arm. He has been a corporate sponsor of HomeAid Atlanta and has generously participated in the organization’s Fairway to Haven® Golf Classic for several years. He is a wonderful ambassador for HomeAid, continually encouraging his employees to support the organization through volunteerism and participation in fundraising events and other activities.

In addition to his local leadership roles, David represents Atlanta’s housing industry at the state and national levels. David served with distinction as the 2010 President of the Home Builders Association of Georgia and the chair of its executive committee. During his year as HBAG president, David led the state association to prevent the mandating of fire sprinklers statewide, and he was instrumental in creating the recently launched health insurance plan that is available for all HBA members. In 2010 through David’s tireless efforts, The Georgia Health Plan Trust was created.  The Trust provides good, competitive health insurance for the members of the Home Builders Association throughout Georgia. He continues his service as its President.

David also serves on the National Association of Home Builders Board of Directors and has participated in the NAHB Builder 20 Group, “America’s Best Builders” for over 11 years.

“As a leader, David is a tremendous asset and resource to the housing industry in Georgia. He continuously provided thoughtful and solid advice with only the best interests of our association and industry in mind,” says Les Stumpff, 2010 HBA president. “David has made many significant contributions to our industry, and I am grateful for his leadership and involvement.”

A devoted family man, David is the proud father of three adult children, sons Jeff and Drew, and daughter Lindsay. In his free time, David enjoys tennis, golf, boating, and skiing.

After spending almost eight years working in Equities trading with UBS Investment Bank in New York and Connecticut, David’s son Drew decided to leave the financial industry to join David at Waterford Homes.  He is currently VP of Land Acquisition and Development at Waterford.

“I made a difficult choice to leave a career I enjoyed to join Waterford.  I wanted to continue the family business and learn from my father, who is more than just an astute business man, but an incredible leader.  I witnessed this first hand when he coached almost every little league baseball and basketball team I played on as a kid.  I’m very happy I made the choice, I enjoy seeing the guy every day – it’s been great for us both.  I’m really proud of him for winning this award.  We will have to put up a big, neon-colored link to the story on our website because otherwise he’d never tell anybody about it.”

The HBA is proud to recognize David Clough as the recipient of the 2014 Lewis Cenker Award. Congratulations, David!
